Advent is a time of hope and anticipation, but also a time of reflection and this year we take the theme Race and Hope. Some of us may find it difficult to talk about race because of the historical dominance of western, European culture. But we have chosen this theme because of events during the course of this year. The Black Lives Matter project has existed for several years, but was galvanised by the murder of George Floyd in May – and now more white people have been involved in protests, seeking honestly to understand and address the wrongs (still) perpetrated against black communities. We are hoping that we can at least start to address some of the issues in our lives together here at St John’s. In terms of ‘together’, lock down has not helped in this regard, but we can start a conversation. This course therefore comes out of our commitment to try to do something about the relationship between black and white people at St John’s and (we hope) in the wider community.
Please note that you must pre-book for the course on Eventbrite so that the Zoom link can be sent to you. The sessions will be recorded so that we can continue to use the thoughts expressed in our future work.
