The bunting is up! After 18 months of performing under Covid restrictions, Crystal Palace’s resident orchestra, the London Mozart Players, is back with a bang! The orchestra kicks off its exciting six-concert SE19 season with a concert packed with the best-loved works in the classical repertoire. In the cherished tradition of the ‘Last Night of the Proms’, St John’s, Upper Norwood, will resound with all your orchestral favourites: Elgar’s ‘Nimrod’ and ‘Pomp and Circumstance March’, Holst’s ‘Jupiter’, Walton’s ‘Crown Imperial’, Vaughan Williams’ ‘Greensleeves’ and much, much more.

Stunning coloratura soprano Christina Johnston will entertain with beloved songs from her opera and theatre repertoire, including Mozart’s incredible ‘Queen of the Night’ aria and musical theatre classic ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’. This magical musical extravaganza has something for everyone.

We have all missed the sheer joy of live music so much. Bring your flags, your voices and your friends! SE19’s very own classical ‘Prom’ is perfect for all the family!

Living in Love and Faith
Oct 6 @ 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

You may have heard about Living in Love and Faith, the Church of England’s initiative to allow people of faith to come to an understanding of what love and faith mean in the context of gender identity, sexuality, relationships (in their widest sense) and marriage, to understand and appreciate the experience of others and for this understanding to deepen and enrich our shared worshipping life.

As part of the response to the resources already published, the Croydon North Deanery is organizing a series of workshops, starting tomorrow (Wednesday), where you are invited to share your own views and experiences, in a supportive and non-judgemental forum.  These sessions are being facilitated by Rebecca Hall, St John’s Churchwarden and Mother Jean Yearwood, Associate Priest at St Luke’s Woodside.  The views and feedback from these sessions will be relayed back up to the Diocese so we really do want a representative selection of people to ensure that the diversity of our part of London is fairly reflected.

The sessions will run over five weeks from 8 September to 13 October (we will have a break on 29 September to allow for the feast of St Michael and All Angels).  They will be held at the vicarage from 6.30-8.30pm and you are welcome to attend some or all, the themes being as follows:
8 September – Learning together: Christian teaching
15 September – Gender identity
22 September – Relationships
6 October – Sex and our bodies
13 October – Drawing it all together

I would like to reiterate that at St John’s we hold the firm view that everyone is deserving of love and respect whatever their identity, sexuality or domestic arrangements and I hope that we can all remind each other of this fundamental truth during our sessions.

Yours
Fr John
