Christmas 2020 at St Johns

29th November, 6:00pm: Advent Carol Service

This year we celebrate the start of Advent on November 29th.  At 6pm you will be able to join us online from St John’s for the Advent Carol Service at 6pm.  Our Choir will sing music by Michael Flemming and Benjamin Britten, we will sing the familiar advent hymn O come, O come, Emmanuel as we hear from scripture the coming of God and his Kingdom in the foreseen birth of Jesus.  Perhaps this year, because this is a service which thinks about the light of Christ’s presence coming into a world of darkness, you might turn on the computer, turn off the lights and light (safely) a candle, and meditate with us through words and music, the joy and hope of all people, the promise of: God with us.

This event will be live streamed on the St John’s Facebook Page and later uploaded to our YouTube channel.

20th December, 3:00pm: Community Carol Service with Katie Rose’s Community Choir (live, ticketed)

Katie has run singing groups for people of diverse backgrounds in community settings including hospitals, hospices, mental health services, PRUs and carers centres since 2002 and we are delighted that she will be bringing her Community Choir to sing for our family and community Carol Service on December 20th at 3pm.  Expect carols and music from around the world, descants and of course the familiar stories from the Bible of the Birth of Jesus which we celebrate in our Christmas Services.  Though COVID-19 has cast a bleak shadow over 2020, let us gather in friendship to celebrate the birth of Jesus in Word and song, reminding us that nothing can ultimately sperate us from God, or our thanksgiving and celebrations.  The Christmas Tree will be illumined at this Service.

20th December, 6:00pm: Carol Service with Parish Choir and Professional Singers (live, ticketed)

At 6pm with candlelight to aid us in our reflection our church choir will sing traditional Christmas anthems and carols reminding us of the forthcoming birth of the infant Jesus in Bethlehem:  Once in royal David’s city, O come, all ye faithful and Hark! the herald angels sing.  As we remain Covid compliant, the magnificent choir of St John’s will through music help us draw deeper into the mystery of Christmas, culminating in the words from St John’s Gospel: And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth”.

21st December, 7:00pm: Community Carol Service with Concordia Choir (live, ticketed)

On Monday 21st December at 7:00pm we are deeply grateful that Concordia, the well-known South London based chamber choir will be singing for our Carol Service. Using their own repertoire combined with the traditional readings from the 9 Lessons and Carols Service, we will celebrate again the story of our hope and joy, in the infant Jesus being born of Mary.  We will give thanks in being together safely, and enjoy the merry music of this choir and the pipe organ to aid us in our celebration.  Gathering around the tree, we will give thanks for the symbols of the Season, and pray that the light of the Star which tops our magnificent tree, which guided the wise men to the place where Jesus was born, will be the guiding light for us, in these difficult days.  Come and listen to magnificent music and thought-provoking readings remind us of our hope and our joy.
