Biography:
Nicholas Ansdell-Evans (piano) has composed orchestral and chamber music, songs, church music, and solo piano and organ music. His opera, Carina, received an acclaimed showcase at English National Opera. Premières this year include the song It was not always like this for counter-tenor and piano (text by Tatiana Malkova, a Ukrainian refugee) at the Royal College of Music; upcoming performances include Vivre d’amour for unaccompanied 8-part choir (text by Ste Thérèse de Lisieux) in Coutances in July and in Dulwich on 26th September.
Nicholas was a pianist répétiteur and assistant conductor at English National Opera for over twenty years, and has worked extensively elsewhere, for example with Sir Simon Rattle (as répétiteur for Wagner’s Ring cycle in Aix-en-Provence and Salzburg) and Sir Mark Elder (most recently as assistant conductor for operas and concerts at the Palau de les Arts, Valencia). Since 2015, he has been a frequent guest member of the music staff at the Royal Opera, London.
Nicholas was a chorister at St John’s, Upper Norwood, and an organ student of Adrian Adams.
Amélie Roussel (viola) has been Section Principal Viola of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House since 2015. She previously held positions in the Orchestra of English National Opera, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, and the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in Geneva. She regularly appears as guest principal viola with the London Symphony Orchestra and the BBC Symphony Orchestra.
She studied at the Conservatoire in Paris with Françoise Gnéri and Bruno Pasquier, and later at the Juilliard School in New York with Karen Tuttle.
James Burke (clarinet) enjoys a varied international career and is currently Principal Clarinet of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House. He has previously held principal positions with the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Academy of St Martin-inthe-Fields, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and Royal Northern Sinfonia. He appears regularly as Guest Principal with many of the UK’s leading orchestras, including the London Symphony Orchestra, London Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonia Orchestra, Sinfonia of London, and the John Wilson Orchestra. Alongside his orchestral work, he is active as a chamber musician and recording artist, and is the founder of South Coast Concerts, a chamber music series based in Dorset.
James is a professor of clarinet at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. Education has long been central to his work: he previously served as Director of Music at Milton Abbey School and Head of Wind and Brass at Bryanston School. He gives regular masterclasses and coaching, e.g. at the Royal College of Music, the Australian National Academy of Music, Southbank Sinfonia, and with the education departments of the London Symphony Orchestra and the Academy of St Martin-inthe-Fields.
