Children and Youth Minister

St John’s, Upper Norwood, is seeking a Children and Youth Minister to help lead and develop our ministry with children and young people at an exciting time of growth.

Children and youth ministry is central to the life and mission of St John’s. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in a vibrant, inclusive Anglican parish, nurturing faith and community among children, young people, and families.

As a Children and Youth Minister, you will support the Associate Vicar in delivering outreach projects, including PlayTime! Messy Church and Messy Meals, as well as discipleship to 0-18 year olds.  There is an opportunity for this role to grow into a leadership role with oversight of the delivery of children, youth and families mission and ministry.

  • The Children and Youth Minister will:

    • Lead and support weekly PlayTime! toddler worship (Fridays, 9:30–11:00am)

    • Lead and support weekly Messy Meals (Wednesdays, 3:30–5:30pm)

    • Help lead monthly Messy Church

    • Lead and develop Sunday morning children’s and youth groups (ages 0–18)

    • Build strong relationships with children, young people, and families

    • Maintain attendance registers and session records

    • Support and develop volunteer teams

  • St John’s is a thriving, high Anglican parish in Upper Norwood, South London, serving a diverse community. Around 23% of the parish are children and young people under 18.

    Since launching our children’s, youth, and families’ programme in 2023, Sunday morning attendance has grown from 80 to 125, with the number of children increasing from 5 to 40. Worship is traditional in style, with a sung Mass, choir, incense, and the Angelus.

    Alongside Sunday groups, we run a weekly toddler worship group, weekly Messy Meals, and a large monthly Messy Church gathering, as well as trips, camps, and preparation for First Communion and Confirmation.

Salary & Hours

Salary: £34,000/year, plus pension contribution
Hours: 35 hours/ week. This is a full-time position, but applications will also be considered for part-time hours.
Contract: 6-month probationary period
Start date: April/May 2026

Director of Music

St John’s, Upper Norwood, is seeking a Director of Music to lead and develop the musical life of the parish, with a particular focus on growing our adult choir and our newly established Children’s Choir.

Music is central to worship and community life at St John’s. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in a vibrant, inclusive Anglican parish, renewing the choral tradition while inspiring children, young people, and adults through high-quality church music.

The Director of Music will be responsible for directing music at regular services and festivals, rehearsing and developing choirs, and working closely with the clergy and staff team to support worship and mission. The role offers scope for creativity, leadership, and collaboration within a well-resourced church setting.

  • This is a part-time Director of Music role at St John’s Church, Upper Norwood, with responsibility for leading music across worship and growing both the Adult Choir and the Children’s Choir (ages 7–13).

    The post holder will direct music at regular services and festivals, rehearse choirs weekly, support special services as agreed, and work closely with clergy and staff to shape the musical and liturgical life of the parish. There is flexibility in how the role is delivered, with scope for creativity and development.

  • St John’s is a vibrant and inclusive Anglican parish church in Upper Norwood, with a strong commitment to children, young people, families, and the Anglican choral tradition.

    The church is well resourced, with a supportive clergy team, full-time staff, committed volunteers, and excellent musical facilities, including a TC Lewis pipe organ restored and enhanced in 2024. The parish has strong links with local schools and a growing number of children involved in worship and music.

  • This role involves working with children and young people and is therefore subject to an enhanced DBS check and satisfactory references.

Salary & Hours

Salary: £24,000–£30,000 per year, including pastoral services, plus pension
Hours: Part-time, 16 hours per week, including Sundays
Contract: Initial 12-month fixed-term contract with a 6-month probationary period
Start date: April / May 2026
