Volunteering Experiences: Meet Danny

Commissioned by the Bishop in 2019, Danny lives out his calling as a Pastoral Lay Minister with a heart for serving God’s kingdom through community outreach. From leading missional projects like The Hub and the Refugees Café to supporting children’s ministries and visiting the sick, Danny’s commitment reflects the inclusive love and openness of St John’s.

In this interview, he shares how volunteering allows him to build meaningful relationships across faiths and backgrounds, bringing hope, care, and belonging to all.

  1. What do you do as a volunteer at St John’s?
I was commissioned by Bishop Christopher in June 2019 as a Commissioned Pastoral Lay Minister (SPA), which affirmed my calling to bring God’s living water to our community. At St John’s, I help lead teams of volunteers and support four key missional outreach projects: The Hub (a community lunch with art, crafts, and choir), a Christian meditation group, a refugee café, and various children and youth projects. I also share in the ministry of taking Communion to the sick, housebound, and nursing homes.

  2. Why do you enjoy volunteering?
What inspires me most are Jesus’ commandments and the relationships we build through our volunteer work. Our church embraces people from all backgrounds and faiths — including refugees of diverse religions and no faith — with love and openness. Seeing those who once had negative views change through meeting refugees, and witnessing the joy and safety they find here, is deeply rewarding. It’s a privilege to share in their stories, struggles, and gifts, and to serve God’s kingdom alongside a community willing to seek and serve.

  3. What’s one memorable moment or highlight from volunteering this past year?
One of the most powerful experiences is being part of the refugees’ café project. The generosity of our neighbours who donate clothes and essentials, and the transformation of attitudes toward refugees through relationship and hospitality, has been remarkable. Watching these women and children feel safe, welcomed, and loved in our church environment highlights the living out of God’s love in action.
