Volunteering Experiences: Meet Claudia
Claudia is one of the many dedicated volunteers who help make St John’s the vibrant, welcoming community it is today. She’s been part of our church family for over a decade, sharing her time, talents (and baking!) across many areas of church life.
From welcoming people at the door, to teaching Sunday school, to organising community events, Claudia brings warmth, joy, and a whole lot of heart to everything she does.
We asked her to share a bit about her volunteer journey — here’s what she had to say:
What do you do as a volunteer at St John’s?
I have my hands in many pies, literally! I’m part of the many bakers here at St John’s. It’s one of my passions as I’m always baking and cooking. I’m part of the Welcoming team – I enjoy greeting people as they come into church and looking after them. I am a Sunday school teacher, which always brings me joy, as well as being involved in the wonderful children’s Playgroup on a Friday morning, where I sing to the beautiful little ones. I’m also part of the social group where we organise events for the local community like the yearly black history month event, and I’m a member of the parochial Church council (PCC)…like I said… many pies! Why do you enjoy volunteering?
I’ve been a part of St John’s for over 10 years, and the reason I’ve stayed faithful to our church and continue to volunteer is because of the sense of community and family I feel when I’m here, serving others. Volunteering is an important part of my life and who I am, and gives me a sense of giving something back to the community; learning about others, making one person feel better about themselves by listening to them, and sharing experiences, is highly rewarding… Not to mention I love talking (I mean really love talking, LOL!) especially to new people. Making people feel appreciated and welcome is where my heart lies, and when I come alive the most. As a Sunday school teacher, it’s also extremely rewarding seeing the children nurtured and grow in Christ from babies to teenagers. What’s one memorable moment or highlight from volunteering this past year?
It’s been a fabulous year so far, with so many amazing activities. Organising the Black History Month event last October was a challenge to pull off, but the outcomes were extremely rewarding, and that feeling of accomplishment was great. The youth and a black opera ensemble were involved in performing, congregation, family and friends helped make food and serve guests – all pulled together to make a great, fun night of entertainment, and a celebration of cultural diversity.
Feeling inspired?
